"estimated" means not found printed and taken from a sibling product. Square feet per roll is sheets × sheet width × sheet length / 144. ## Method 1. Total sheets in a pack = rolls × sheets per roll. 2. Price per 100 sheets = price ÷ total sheets × 100. The lower number is the better deal per sheet. 3. Price per square foot = price ÷ (total sheets × sheet width × sheet length / 144). Fairer when sheet sizes differ. 4. Price per square foot × ply = price ÷ (square feet × ply / 2). Counts a 3-ply sheet as 1.5 times a 2-ply one. 5. Results within 0.5% of each other are treated as a tie. An Honest Roll is 6 square feet of paper, about one regular roll from any of these brands. ## Softness - [The toilet paper softness scale](https://toiletpaper.app/softness): How soft Charmin, Quilted Northern, Angel Soft and Kirkland Signature toilet paper is, from 0 to 10, scored from published tests. Sandpaper included for scale. Softness has no industry standard, so each line gets a coarse score from 0 to 10. A line with no good source is "not rated" instead of guessed. Checked October 2026. - Start from TechGearLab's tester-panel softness score (updated February 2025), the one current test that puts a number on most of these lines, rounded to a whole number. - Move a line by one point at most when another independent test clearly disagrees: Good Housekeeping Institute (updated February 2026, a blind tester panel plus an EmTec Tissue Softness Analyzer run by NC State) or Reviewed (updated May 2024, hands-on). - A brand's own tier names only order lines within that brand. Charmin sells Ultra Soft for comfort and Ultra Strong for strength; Quilted Northern calls Ultra Plush its cushiest. They never set a score on their own. - A line is rated only when a current test covers that line. Tests of discontinued versions, single blog posts, retailer star ratings and paywalled results we couldn't read don't count. - One score covers every size in a line (Mega, Mega XL, Super Mega): the tests rate the paper, not the roll size. - Scores are coarse on purpose. Read a one-point gap as a small difference and three points or more as a clear one. What matters more (`p` in calculator links and /api/compare): - `cheap` (default): the lowest price per unit wins. Softness doesn't count. - `balanced`: start from the cheapest pack. A softer pack wins if it costs at most 10% more per unit for each softness point it gains over the cheapest (2 points softer may cost up to 20% more). Of the packs that qualify, the softest wins, then the cheaper. If the cheapest pack isn't rated, Balanced can't weigh it and keeps the cheapest. - `soft`: the softest rated pack wins; the cheaper one breaks a tie. Packs that aren't rated are left out. If no pack is rated, the cheapest wins. | Line | Score | Why | Sources | |---|---|---|---| | Charmin Ultra Soft | 10/10 | TechGearLab scored it 8.6, tied for the top. Good Housekeeping's 2026 lab and panel test found it the softest it tested, so it gets the extra point. Reviewed picked it for comfort. | Good Housekeeping Institute (updated 2026-02-10, https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home-products/g32469568/best-toilet-paper/); TechGearLab (updated 2025-02-13, https://www.techgearlab.com/topics/home/best-toilet-paper); Reviewed (USA Today) (updated 2024-05-02, https://www.reviewed.com/home-outdoors/best-right-now/the-best-toilet-paper); Charmin (checked 2026-10, https://www.charmin.com/en-us/tips-and-articles/charmin-ultra-soft-vs-ultra-strong-whats-the-difference) | | Quilted Northern Ultra Plush | 8/10 | TechGearLab scored it 7.8. Good Housekeeping's 2026 test gave it some of the highest softness scores, and Reviewed called it one of the most comfortable rolls it tested. | TechGearLab (updated 2025-02-13, https://www.techgearlab.com/topics/home/best-toilet-paper); Good Housekeeping Institute (updated 2026-02-10, https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home-products/g32469568/best-toilet-paper/); Reviewed (USA Today) (updated 2024-05-02, https://www.reviewed.com/home-outdoors/best-right-now/the-best-toilet-paper); Quilted Northern (checked 2026-10, https://www.quiltednorthern.com/toilet-paper/ultra-plush) | | Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong | 7/10 | TechGearLab scored it 7.4. Good Housekeeping found it not quite as soft as Ultra Plush, and Reviewed not quite as comfortable as Charmin Ultra Soft. | TechGearLab (updated 2025-02-13, https://www.techgearlab.com/topics/home/best-toilet-paper); Good Housekeeping Institute (updated 2026-02-10, https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home-products/g32469568/best-toilet-paper/); Reviewed (USA Today) (updated 2024-05-02, https://www.reviewed.com/home-outdoors/best-right-now/the-best-toilet-paper) | | Charmin Ultra Strong | 6/10 | TechGearLab scored it 6.8, which rounds to 7. Reviewed found it not as soft as Ultra Soft or several others, and Charmin sells it for strength, so it sits a point under Quilted Northern Ultra Soft & Strong. | TechGearLab (updated 2025-02-13, https://www.techgearlab.com/topics/home/best-toilet-paper); Reviewed (USA Today) (updated 2024-05-02, https://www.reviewed.com/home-outdoors/best-right-now/the-best-toilet-paper); Charmin (checked 2026-10, https://www.charmin.com/en-us/tips-and-articles/charmin-ultra-soft-vs-ultra-strong-whats-the-difference) | | Angel Soft | 5/10 | TechGearLab scored Angel Soft Double 5.4, and Reviewed found Angel Soft less comfortable than the top brands. Neither test names the Mega sizes, so this assumes the same paper. | TechGearLab (updated 2025-02-13, https://www.techgearlab.com/topics/home/best-toilet-paper); Reviewed (USA Today) (updated 2024-05-02, https://www.reviewed.com/home-outdoors/best-right-now/the-best-toilet-paper) | | Charmin Essentials (1-ply) | not rated | The tests we found (TechGearLab 2025, Reviewed 2024) rated the old Essentials Soft, which Charmin replaced with this 1-ply roll. No test of the current roll yet. | none found | | Kirkland Signature Bath Tissue | not rated | The tests we found are old (Consumer Reports 2014, a 2018 panel of an older 425-sheet roll) or a single blog post. Consumer Reports' 2025 test includes Kirkland, but its results are paywalled. | none found | | Kirkland Signature Ultra Soft | not rated | No independent test found. The name says it's softer than the regular Kirkland roll, but a name alone isn't a score. | none found | Regular rolls are each brand's measuring unit, not a pack you buy, so they aren't rated. Custom rolls are never rated. A few reference points that aren't products are on the /softness scale for comparison (sandpaper at 0, average port-a-potty toilet paper at 2 and a cloud at 11). They aren't in the calculator or the API. ## Questions ### Why compare by sheets? Because the name on the pack doesn't say how much paper is on the roll, and a sheet is a sheet. Count the sheets, divide the price by them, and the lower number wins. When two packs use quite different sheet sizes, compare by paper area instead. The calculator does both. ### What do Mega and Mega XL mean? They're size names, not sheet counts, and each brand picks its own. Charmin Mega has 208 to 407 sheets and Mega XL has 312 to 330. Quilted Northern Mega has 255 sheets. Angel Soft Mega has 320 sheets and Mega XL has 480. Kirkland Signature skips the size names and just prints the sheet count. At Charmin, Mega XL replaced Super Mega. Quilted Northern still calls its bigger roll Super Mega. See every Mega size. ### Why does "= 4 regular rolls" differ by brand? Each brand compares its big rolls to its own regular roll, and the brands don't agree on what a regular roll is. Charmin's has 52 sheets, Quilted Northern's has 63 sheets, Angel Soft's has 80 sheets. So "= 4 regular rolls" means 208 sheets at Charmin, 252 sheets at Quilted Northern and 320 sheets at Angel Soft. Kirkland Signature doesn't make that claim at all and just prints the sheet count. Charmin Mega vs Quilted Northern Mega goes through one example. ### Does ply matter? A bit. Ply is the number of layers in a sheet: more layers make a thicker sheet, not a bigger one. Quilted Northern Ultra Plush is 3-ply, Charmin Essentials is 1-ply, and the rest here are 2-ply. Pick Area × ply in the calculator to count a 3-ply sheet as 1.5 two-ply sheets. Whether that's worth paying for is between you and your bathroom. ### Are all sheets the same size? Close, but no. Most are about 4 inches square. Charmin: 4 × 3.92 in (Mega, Mega XL, Super Mega); 4.27 × 3.72 in (Mega XXL). Quilted Northern: 4 × 3.8 in (Mega); 3.7 × 4.1 in (Super Mega). Angel Soft: 3.8 × 4 in (Mega, Mega XL). Kirkland Signature: 4.5 × 4 in. ### Do rolls really shrink? Yes, quietly, and the "= N regular" claim usually stays put. Charmin Ultra Soft Mega went from 244 sheets to 208 and still says "= 4 regular". Charmin's 363-sheet Ultra Strong Super Mega became a 330-sheet Mega XL. Quilted Northern sells two different Ultra Soft & Strong Super Mega rolls, with 378 and 438 sheets, under one name. Read the sheet count, not the name. ### Which brand is cheapest? Whichever is on sale. Prices change every week, so divide each pack's price by its total sheets (rolls × sheets per roll) and the lower number wins. Kirkland Signature comes in big 30 and 36-roll packs, so compare it per sheet, not per pack. How to find the cheapest per sheet walks through it, and the calculator does it for you. ### What's an Honest Roll? Our own unit: 6 square feet of paper, about one regular roll from any of these brands. The roll converter uses it so a roll from one brand can be measured against another without anyone's marketing. ### Where do the numbers come from? From the makers first: the sheet counts, sheet sizes and "= N regular" claims on Charmin, Quilted Northern, Angel Soft and Kirkland Signature's own sites and pack photos. When a maker doesn't print a number, we use a retailer listing for the same pack and say so. Last checked October 2026. Packs change, so trust the one in your hand, and if it doesn't match, type its numbers into Custom. Every number has a link to its source on the data page.See the sources ### Which toilet paper is the softest? Of the rolls we track, Charmin Ultra Soft scores highest, 10 out of 10. Softness has no industry standard, so the scores come from published tests and each brand's own tiers. The softness scale shows every rated roll, with sources. ### Can I use these numbers? Yes, they're free to use. Please link back to toiletpaper.app. Data & API has every roll in one table and a way to get it as JSON. ### Is this affiliated with the brands? No. This is an independent site, not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Charmin, Quilted Northern, Angel Soft or Kirkland Signature. Brand names belong to their owners. There are no ads or affiliate links, so nobody is paying us to say anything. ## Data and API Read-only JSON, free to use with a link back. CORS is open. - [https://toiletpaper.app/api/products](https://toiletpaper.app/api/products): every brand and roll with sheets per roll, sheet size, square feet, ply, what it equals in regular rolls, its softness score (or null when not rated) with sources, and its source. - [https://toiletpaper.app/api/compare](https://toiletpaper.app/api/compare?mode=sheets&a=charmin-ultra-soft-mega-xl,6,9.99&b=quilted-northern-ultra-soft-strong-mega,12,13.49): `GET /api/compare?mode=sheets&p=cheap&a=,,&b=...` (2 to 8 packs) returns the cost per 100 sheets, per square foot and per square foot × ply for each pack, its softness score, the winner for the priority `p`, the percent difference and a link to the same comparison in the calculator. - [https://toiletpaper.app/openapi.json](https://toiletpaper.app/openapi.json): OpenAPI 3.1 description of both endpoints. - [https://toiletpaper.app/data](https://toiletpaper.app/data): the same docs for people, with the full roll table and a source for every number. ## Links that open with numbers filled in The deal calculator reads its state from the query string, so a link can open a ready comparison: `https://toiletpaper.app/?mode=&a=,,&b=...` - `mode`: `sheets` (price per sheet), `area` (price per square foot) or `areaply` (per square foot, counting ply). - `p`: what matters more. `cheap` (default, lowest price wins), `balanced` or `soft` (softest rated pack wins). See "Softness" below. - `a` to `h`: up to 8 packs. Each is a product id from /api/products, the number of rolls and the price in dollars. The price may be left empty. - A roll that isn't listed: `custom::x:`, with sheet sides in inches, for example `custom:300:4x4:2,12,15.99`. - Example: https://toiletpaper.app/?mode=sheets&a=charmin-ultra-soft-mega-xl,6,9.99&b=quilted-northern-ultra-soft-strong-mega,12,13.49 The roll converter takes `https://toiletpaper.app/convert?roll=&mode=`, for example https://toiletpaper.app/convert?roll=quilted-northern-ultra-plush-mega&mode=area. Bad or unknown values are ignored and the page falls back to its defaults.
